Torch Trust

Torch Trust exists to support people who are blind and partially sighted to encounter Jesus, grow in faith and thrive in Christian community – they received a grant in 2022 and we received the following update from their Support Development Coordinator, Suzie James.

This year with thanks to WDP, Torch has been offering individuals with sight loss a free audio Bible player. Gayle Ann told us ‘it is my friend’, the device is easy to use and can be used offline to listen to the New Testament and Psalms and it has been such an encouragement to those who have received one. We have just ordered another 1,000 players to give away.

Each month we also send out Daily Bible reading notes such as Daily Bread and Every Day with Jesus in large print, braille and audio as well as Christian magazines and library books. Our accessible lending library has nearly 3,000 Christian books including biographies, Christian novels and study books. Rudy says ‘you would not believe the blessing I get from the books you send me’.

People with sight loss can often feel isolated, Tracey who has both visual and hearing impairments says her disabilities often leave her “on the edge of things…I’m always in a crowd but never really part of it.” So Torch offers free advice, training and resources to churches to help them to be fully inclusive.

We have a network of local Torch groups that meet across the UK connecting people with sight loss. Thanks to new technology we are also able to connect people through zoom for online prayer meetings and studies. We have had a great response to our lent course which has met each Thursday and others have been able to ‘catch up’ on YouTube.

It can be tricky to get away on holiday or to be part of mainstream Christian events and so we run Torch Together retreats which are specially designed for those with sight loss. Thanks to our amazing volunteers we can provide guides so that people can take part in activities and day trips as well as enjoying times of worship, teaching and Christian fellowship.

Torch also sends a devotional magazine around the world and we are excited that a merger with Compass Braille in September 2023 will allow us to send braille Bibles in many languages around the world.
