Where God’s Love Takes a Stand

As Lent begins on 18 February, we return to a verse many of us learned as children:
“For God so loved the world that God gave God’s only Son…” (John 3:16).

This verse is more than a familiar promise—it reveals the depth of a love that steps directly into human pain, injustice, and death itself. God does not send the Son to condemn, but to heal and restore what has been broken or dehumanised.

I’m reminded of Rosa Parks – a black woman, whose quiet courage challenged the injustice of segregation in America. Her simple, steadfast act shows that justice often begins when one person chooses dignity over fear, and peace over silence.

This truth feels especially real in Minnesota, where communities continue to grieve lives lost to violence. People of faith have responded with marches, prayers, and songs—standing with the brokenhearted and the marginalised. In these moments, John 3:16 is not just a slogan; it becomes an invitation.

God’s love, revealed on the cross, confronts the “serpents” of our time—racism, brutality, fear, and indifference—and transforms places of pain into places of healing. To believe in this love is to embody it: to stand where Christ stands, beside those who suffer, affirming that every human life carries God-given dignity.

Wherever injustice cries out, John 3:16 calls us to love as God loves—courageously, sacrificially, and without limit.

Prayer:
God of love, give us courage to stand where Christ stands, beside all who suffer. Let your healing justice guide us to love boldly, humbly, and without fear.
