Lifting in Prayer

This is a wonderful time of year. The evenings have lengthened, temperatures have risen, the sun shines brighter than ever and we can take things somewhat easier as many activities slow down during the next few weeks. For some, there is the opportunity to go on holiday abroad while others will choose to enjoy spending time in the UK or even have a stay-vacation at home, enjoying a day here and a day there.

All options are an opportunity to get away from our regular routines and spend time with family and friends. It is good, even necessary, to step back from the busyness of life and take things at a much slower pace. The reality is that we live in a world where the pace of life seems to be getting faster all the time.

The summer months certainly provide each of us with an opportunity to readdress this unhealthy balance. We can go for walks, spend more time with our families, and generally engage in rest and relaxation. But the summer months also provide opportunities for us to spend more time with God – reading the Bible or seeking His guidance in prayer. The prolific Christian author Joyce Meyer once suggested, “The truth is God created us to have relationship with us. He wants to love us and take care of us, and He wants us to love Him.”

This relationship is central to Christianity and it reminds us that God made us and He longs to journey with us through the good and difficult times of life. We all realise that any strong and lasting relationship needs an investment of time. How can knowledge, trust and understanding develop if we won’t spend time with other people? Even more so, how can we grow deeper in our relationship with God if we don’t spend time with Him?

The theme for the 2024 Worship Service is ‘I beg you, bear with one another in love’. This summer we have a wonderful opportunity to spend time alone with God. Perhaps we could take a little time each morning to read through the Epistle of Ephesians and maybe go for a walk each day and find a quiet place where we can pray to God for:

• the Christian women and people in Palestine
• a growing economy
• freedom of movement
• water to be unrestricted to all people
• education to be a source of hope and transformation
• appropriate healthcare for all
• increased improvement for women’s rights
• sustained Christian, Jewish and Muslim interfaith connections
• Palestinian Christian women to keep searching for a deeper understanding among all the people who share the land, trusting for and hoping in the humanity of one another

Lifting in Prayer
by Carole Bourne
Loving God
Creator and keeper of all
We lift to you the Christian women of the Holy Land:
their challenges, hopes and fears.
As you shaped and guided your church in this place, Lord
We pray that you would direct and protect all who call on you,
giving them hope and courage in the face of danger, loss and challenge.
We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen
