In the Summer
In summer my door stands open.
The sun and the sweet summer air
The smiles and calls of passing friends enter my house.
I go out so easily to strangers approaching.
We come and go freely.
In winter my door is closed.
Against the cold and damp.
Against the intrusion of uninvited guests.
Against the possibility of who-knows-what?
I can let in only what I want.
Lord help my heart to have a summer door.
Open to all comers.
Whether I want them or not.
Whether I have time or not.
Whether I feel safe or not.
For in opening my heart to them
I let in the sweet summer air of your spirit.
