Advent Week 1 – Hope
Advent begins not in celebration but in longing. As we light the first candle of hope, we face the shadows of our world—war, displacement, fear, injustice, and the ongoing impact of HIV and AIDS. Advent invites us to hold these realities before God, for Christian hope is not optimism but faithful waiting, trusting that God is at work even when we cannot yet see the outcome.
As we commemorate World AIDS Day today, we are yet again reminded of the power of hope — power made manifest in the long journey toward healing, justice, care, and dignity. This hope calls us to remember lives lost, the stigma that remains, and the courage of communities standing together. Hope is not abstract; it is embodied in caregivers, advocates, and friends who choose love in the face of fear.
Isaiah assures us: “Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” —Isaiah 40:31
This sustaining grace strengthens those living with HIV, those serving on the frontlines, and all who work to end stigma and injustice. In this first week of Advent, we are invited into holy waiting: to notice God in tender places, recognise acts of courage and compassion, and trust that Christ draws near to all who long for healing.
We light this candle not because the world is bright, but because God’s light is coming—breaking through in hope, justice, healing, and love stronger than fear. Amen.
