A Season of Gratitude

1 Thessalonians 5:18: Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

One of the beautiful months of the year is October. The air sharpens, trees glow with colour, harvests are gathered, and the evenings gently draw us back home. October slows our hurried pace and whispers a quiet invitation: pause, notice, and give thanks.

This month, I want to reflect on the practice of gratitude. Gratitude is not just a polite word of thanks—it is a way of seeing life through the lens of faith. It opens our eyes to recognise that all of life is gift—grace received, not earned; something to hold with open hands rather than grasp for control. In a world marked by conflict, uncertainty, and the wounds of the climate crisis, gratitude grounds us in God’s faithfulness. It reminds us that even in fragile times, blessings remain: food shared at our tables, friendships that sustain us, communities that embrace us, and the beauty of creation that still proclaims its Maker.

For people of faith, gratitude is more than a feeling—it is worship. It lifts our gaze to the Giver of all good things. As Paul writes, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Gratitude shapes us into people who reflect God’s generosity. It nurtures joy, resilience, and openness of heart, drawing us deeper into the life of Christ, who gave himself fully for us.

So, as October unfolds, let us embrace it as a season of gratitude. Let us train our hearts to notice the gifts of each day, great and small, and lift them back in thanksgiving to God. And may our gratitude overflow into action: tending creation with care, reaching out in love to neighbours, and sharing generously so that others, too, may know God’s abundance. For when we live in gratitude, we not only receive blessings—we join in God’s renewing work, bearing witness to a world reconciled in Christ’s peace.
